Meet the artist
Born and raised in Bamaga, Far North Queensland, Douglas Tamwoy carries the ancestral stories of the Thupmul clan and the Gudang Yadhaykenu tribe. His family ties stretch from Darnley Island in the Eastern Islands to Badu Island in the West, a lineage rich with knowledge and tradition.
His grandfather’s stories shaped his world, embedding in him a deep cultural connection that now fuels his artistic practice. Working as a FIFO labourer, Douglas dedicates his time outside of work to his art, striving to preserve and share the teachings of his ancestors. His artwork, crafted from wood, resin, natural materials, and acrylic paints, are designed to be felt as much as seen, honouring the landscapes, seasons, and spirit of Far North Queensland's Cape York Peninsula.
Speaking about the exhibition, Douglas shared, “Culture is very important and is a beautiful feeling to share and tell a story when creating my art.”
